Updated October 2026 · Sierra Property Buyers · Humboldt County
Need to sell your house fast in Bridgeville? Whether you're dealing with foreclosure, an inherited property, or a house that needs repairs — we can help. We buy houses as-is, with no fees, no commissions, and flexible closing timelines.
Before you decide
A cash sale is not the right answer for every property. If your Bridgeville home is in sound condition and you can wait for a conventional buyer, listing usually nets more — and we will tell you when that is the case rather than let you find out afterward.

Bridgeville and Upper Van Duzen Property, Bought As-Is
Bridgeville is a hamlet of a few dozen people on the Van Duzen River, at about 636 feet of elevation where Highway 36 crosses the river on its way east from Carlotta. It began as Robinson’s Crossing, became Bridgeport after the first bridge over the Van Duzen was built in 1875, and took the Bridgeville name when its post office opened in 1877. In 2002 the 83-acre townsite became widely known as the first town auctioned on eBay, and it has changed hands several times since. Almost everything for sale out here, though, is not in the townsite at all: it is ranch land, timbered acreage, cabins and owner-built homes scattered along the river and up the side roads. Sierra Property Buyers buys that kind of property for cash, in any condition.
Why Bridgeville-Area Owners Sell Directly
Financing is the first obstacle. Many homes in the hills around Bridgeville run on solar and generators, take water from springs or creeks, and use septic systems that were never inspected. Lenders and appraisers expect permitted structures on a utility grid with legal water and recorded road access. When a property lacks any of those, the financed buyer disappears, and an owner is left marketing to a very small group of cash buyers who are willing to make the drive.
Access is the second. Highway 36 between Carlotta and Bridgeville runs through unstable ground, and slides east of Devil’s Elbow kept the road closed for long stretches in early 2025, with Caltrans warning it could close again at any time. Beyond the highway, many parcels are reached by private roads or easements that were never formally recorded. A title company that cannot insure access will stop a conventional sale cold.
Valuation is the third. There is no neighborhood of comparable homes here, only a handful of rural sales a year spread across a large area, each with different acreage, water, timber and improvements. An appraiser asked to support a price on an owner-built house on 40 acres of second-growth timber has very little to work with.
Distance is the last. Bridgeville is more than an hour from Eureka on a winding road, and many owners inherited land here or bought it years ago and now live far away. Managing a remote property you rarely visit — the taxes, the brush clearance, the risk of trespass — is often what finally prompts a sale.
The Upper Van Duzen
The Van Duzen gauge at Bridgeville is the reference point for the whole river. Its record stage is 24 feet, reached on December 22, 1964, at a flow of about 48,700 cubic feet per second. The river is gentle in summer and very different in a big winter storm, and property on the flats near the crossing carries that history even when the house sits above it.
The bridge is part of the story too. In the 1920s the state replaced Bridgeville’s old covered bridge with a concrete arch, one of five concrete bridges built on the Van Duzen highway in that era. Today Highway 36 is the area’s only paved link to the coast, with Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park downstream toward Carlotta and the road continuing east toward Dinsmore and Trinity County.
Bridgeville School, a K–8 school and the seat of its own small elementary district, is the closest thing the area has to a community center. Families who buy here usually want land and quiet more than convenience, and they tend to be local or from elsewhere in Humboldt rather than relocating from the Bay Area.
When the Town Itself Is for Sale
Bridgeville is unusual in that the townsite — houses, post office building and land — has been sold as a single package more than once. After the 2002 eBay auction the original high bidder backed out and the town sold for $700,000; it sold again in 2006 for $1.25 million, and a later deal around $900,000 fell through in 2013. That history gets repeated in every article about the place, but it says little about what an ordinary ranch or cabin nearby is worth.
Values for most property around Bridgeville come from acreage, timber, water and access, not from the townsite’s headline sales. We base our offers on rural sales from across the upper Van Duzen and similar parts of eastern Humboldt, and we will share the sales we used.
Timber, Brush and Fire Season
Much of the land above the river is second-growth timber and brush, and CAL FIRE maps large parts of eastern Humboldt as high or very high fire hazard. That affects insurance: an owner may find coverage only through the state’s FAIR Plan, and a buyer may face the same problem. We buy regardless of how the parcel is insured or whether it is insured at all.
Merchantable timber can add value, but harvesting it involves a timber harvest plan or exemption and a licensed forester. If you have had the timber cruised or have a forester’s estimate, share it; if not, we will value the land conservatively and tell you how we arrived at the number.
Every offer is in writing with no obligation to accept — there's never any pressure or fee.
